Lane Residence
New Dwelling | Complete
Set within the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, this completed knock-down rebuild replaces an existing dwelling with a contemporary single level home carefully integrated into its sloping site.
Surrounded by established gum trees, the home is anchored into the hillside, stepping with the natural fall of the land to minimise excavation and maintain a strong connection to the landscape. The building form remains low and grounded, allowing the surrounding vegetation to remain the dominant feature of the site.
The brief called for a flexible family home capable of evolving over time. In response, the layout balances generous open living areas with more private bedroom zones, creating clear separation without compromising connectivity. A dedicated work-from-home studio has been thoughtfully integrated and designed to function independently, allowing it to operate as a secondary dwelling when required.
The home is carefully oriented to capture northern light, flooding the primary living spaces with warm winter sun while maintaining comfort year-round. This passive approach enhances the quality of the internal spaces while contributing to the home’s overall energy performance.
Material selection and detailing respond to both the bushland setting and performance requirements, with a focus on durability and low maintenance. The project addressed several technical constraints, including a Bushfire Overlay requiring BAL 19 compliance, while also achieving an 8.3-star energy efficiency rating through careful orientation, passive design principles, and high-performance building elements.
The result is a considered and highly liveable home that sits comfortably within its environment, with a layout designed for long-term flexibility.
